- Grinding or metal-on-metal scraping when the door moves. The nylon sleeve around the roller wheel has cracked or separated, and the bare steel core is running directly on the track. It will only get louder, and it starts shaving material off the track itself.
- Shuddering or bouncing halfway through travel. One or more rollers has flat-spotted or seized, so the door catches and releases as each bad roller passes the curve of the track. It feels like the opener is fighting something, because it is.
- Visible wobble in the door as it runs. A roller with excess stem play rocks back and forth inside the hinge. That play widens the hinge barrel over time, which turns a $15 roller replacement into a hinge replacement too.
- Black dust or fine metal shavings along the track. Dried-out bearings grind themselves into powder. If you see gray or black residue on the horizontal track near the motor, that’s bearing material leaving the roller.

The bottom brackets hold the cable tension, and loosening the wrong bolts releases that energy into whatever is closest.
